Submissions

Warpland is a Literary Journal that promotes graduate and professional writers of poetry, short stories, academic essays, and scholarly reviews that explore the Black experience, locally, nationally, and globally from multiple perspectives. We only accept unpublished submissions.

Please limit poetry submissions to 5 poems: 3 pages per poem.

Please limit prose pieces to one submission at a time with no more than 8 pages (Times New Roman, 12pt font, Double Spaced, 1inch margin). We may consider a suite of two or three flash pieces but due to the volume of submissions, we are only to review one submission per person during each submission period.

Please limit academic essays and scholarly reviews to 15 pages (Times New Roman, 12pt font, Double Spaced, 1inch margin).

*Materials published in Warpland do not necessarily represent the views of the journal’s editors, staff, or financial supporters, and these parties, therefore, disavow any legal responsibility for the materials.

WORKSHOPS

 Workshop #1

Fiction

Writing

Learn how to use the techniques of fiction to craft true narratives; investigate how to write personal stories without knowing exactly what happened; learn the secrets to writing a killer first sentence; and ensure your readers will keep turning the page by building tension & suspense in your fiction.

 Workshop #2

The
Creative Lab

The MFA program at Chicago State University is a creative home to writers of all genres and ambitions. We feature open-enrollment, noncredit writing classes in Chicago designed to inspire and challenge, and offer manuscript consultations and free community events.

 Workshop #3

Publishing Masterclass

We have helped many student writers get successfully published. Now we are opening up our home and taking to the  web to host two six-week master classes that will be tailored to the books of the eight writers who participate. You will come out of the master class with a polished pitch, a bio that brings the best out in you, comparable titles, a publishing strategy, a list of agents or publishers tailored to your book, a toolkit to build your platform, and much more.
